Should I cover my teak furniture in the winter?

This time of year, we often get asked about leaving your teak furniture outdoors all winter. Many people want to know if it is a good idea to cover the furniture.

In short, if you have purchased high quality teak furniture (see our other blogs or our website www.AtlantaTeak.com) there is no need to cover it. Your furniture should be fine year round in the elements.

One exception would be if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow.  A few inches every so often, is fine.  But, if you get many inches several times a year, you may want to cover your furniture.

If you decide to cover it, we suggest a cover that can breathe. Covers that do not allow the wood to breathe can create a moist, damp environment under the cover, which can actually promote mold and mildew. These covers may be worse than no cover at all, especially for tables or other items where the cover is directly on the furniture.

Some companies sell covers that come with an inflatable pillow, to create a dome affect and keep the air moving underneath the cover.  This is a good idea to help prevent mold and mildew.  You can accomplish this by buying your covers a little bigger and use any blow up pool toy to create the extra space.
